February 2015 Update

The St. John of God Brothers in collaboration with a workforce of 142 co-workers in our 3 Institutions which include the General hospital, the clinic and the Nursing School. As a follow up of our last updates in January, 2015, the Brothers decided in collaboration with the co-workers to re-open the Outpatient department. Kaffu Bullom - Marampa

Port Loko District – Kaffu Bullom – Marampa

The St. John of God Catholic Services are both located in two extreme chiefdoms as indicated in the district map above. In Port Loko district, there are 11 Chiefdoms of which Marampa(about 55,000) and Kaffu Bullom (about 65,000) inhabitants. Kaffu Bullom is the chiefdom where the International airport is located and Marampa is where the country;s highest revenues from Mining is derived. So these two chiefdoms are crucial for the Government and these are where we find ourselves. Sigue leyendo

Interventions for Ebola response in de Marampa Chiefdom

Proposed by the Hospitaller Order of St. John of God Brothers working in the Diocese of Makeni.

As a congregation and with a mandate and contract with the Public to run a General Hospital in the Marampa Chiefdom, we resolved during the period of quarantine of the hospital to initiate a plan of activities to be carried out in the Chiefdom in order to break the chain of exponential transmission of the EBV disease, which at this time of September and October, 2014, the rate of new infections was extremely high in the Chiefdom. This forced our hospital to hesitate to re-open especially after when one of the Brothers, Dr. Manuel Garcia Viejo got himself infected on 11 September, and passed on 25th September, 2014 in Spain. HOSPITAL STAFF READY FOR FOOD DISTRIBUTION TO QUARANTINE HOMES

Acabamos de recibir el último informe del Hno Michael Koroma sobre la situación del Hospital de Mabesseneh. Podemos ver la dramática situación que padece el país con 2000 nuevos casos en el mes de Noviembre, y el trabajo prioritario de información y explicación a la población de evitar prácticas de alto riesgo. Desde el día 10 se ha abierto el Holding Center para enfermos de Ébola en el Hospital. Ya han atendido a  cuatro pacientes, tres de los cuales han fallecido. Trabajan conjuntamente con International Medical Corps (IMC) y Oxfam Sierra Leona para ver la forma de abrir el hospital para pacientes no-Ébola lo más pronto posible. Mientras tanto siguen con el trabajo de educación sanitaria con los líderes y con la población en Marmapa Chiefdom, y con las ayudas de alimentos y productos básicos a familias en cuarentena. Ebola Virus outbreak in Sierra Leone

Role played by Brothers of St. John of God through the St. John of God Catholic Hospital, Lunsar and St. John of God Community Health Centre, Lungi.

Since the discovery of the first positive case of Ebola virus patient in a small village in Kailahun on May 25th, 2014, the St. John of God Brothers had nothing to scare about at the onset because this village is a 1000km away from where the hospital of the Brothers is located in Lunsar and the health centre in Lungi.
